The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) slapped BPL franchise Barisal Bulls co-owner Rizwan Bin Faruque with life-ban for manhandling an official during the Asia Cup final in last March.
BCB vice-president AZM Nasir announced the punishment after a meeting of the disciplinary committee yesterday, saying that Rizwan is suspended from all activities under the jurisdiction of the board.
Rizwan is under contract with the BCB as a commercial partner until June 2016.
He had acted as the local agent of Asia Cup sponsor Twentyfirst Century Media.
The BCB had filed a general diary with the Mirpur Police Station in Dhaka on January 29, accusing Rizwan and two other individuals for hatching a conspiracy against the tournament.
Rizwan blamed Moinul Haque Chowdhury, the proprietor of Total Sports Marketing, a broadcast partner of BCB, for influencing the board to file the diary against him.
He publicly shoved Moinul and head-butted him during the prize distribution ceremony of the Asia Cup final, an incident witnessed by most of the BCB high-ups, foreign dignitaries, players and the journalists. Nasir said the incident in public place in front of so many foreign players and dignitaries tarnished the image of the board which forced them to take a stern action against him.
“He is declared as persona non grata in the stadium area and also is banned to participate in any activities under the jurisdiction of the BCB. He can’t be involved with any BPL franchise,” Nasir said.
“What’s his problem with Moinul, is not our cup of tea. He misbehaved and physically tortured him in a place where dignitaries were present and where such sort of action is not allowed. It is absolutely a crime.”
BCB has some sponsorship deal with his Axiom Technologies, a company owned by Rizwan. Nasir said the legal department of the board will look after that.
The Barisal Bulls franchise however will be run by the other owners, said Nasir.
“They have other owners who can run the franchise but Rizwan is strictly prohibited to be involved in it.”
Later another BCB director Sheikh Sohel who witnessed the incident said Rizwan was unable to resist him at that time.
“We are astonished to watch him physically attacking a person, that too in the stadium during a presentation ceremony. I tried to resist him but he was completely drunk. This is a grave offense that BCB couldn’t tolerate,” Sohel, also the chairman of BCB logistic committee said.
In another development, the board upheld the suspension of fast bowler Shahadat Hossain after he failed to submit the necessary paper of court dismissing case of beating an under-aged house maid.
The board banned him from all form of cricket as police investigate allegations that he and his wife beat their 11-year-old maid. He later faced arrest over alleged domestic help abuse but asked by the board to prove him innocent if he wants the ban to be lifted.
Hossain claimed the case was dismissed and submitted an application with a paper from court to the BCB, seeking a permission to play in the upcoming Dhaka Premier League (DPL).
The disciplinary committee of BCB scrutinized all the papers, provided by the cricketers but found no rationale of lifting the suspension.
“He submitted some papers in which we didn’t get any proof that his case was dismissed. That’s why the suspension is upheld. If all the matters are dismissed by the court, we’ll consider his plea,” said AZM Nasir, the chairman of BCB disciplinary committee.
In September last year, Hossain filed a complaint with the police, claiming his house help had gone missing. But hours later, the 11-year-old girl surfaced to accuse the cricketer and his wife of subjecting her to regular torture.
Shahadat’s name wasn’t included in the recent players draft for the DPL but the player was found practicing with Mohammedan Sporting Club yesterday which raised a concern. Later the disciplinary committee’s decision sealed his fate.
The board meanwhile lifted the ban on Roqibul Hassan, a former national captain who turned to match referee. Hassan made some insulting and false comments on BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon in a private television channel, apparently being unaware of that his speech was recorded. He was being stayed away from BCB activities after that but the board lifted the ‘silent suspension’, considering his contribution to the Bangladesh cricket.
