For the first time in the history of the country’s paramilitary force, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), retired army officials up to the ranks of Captain and Major, are going to be appointed on a contractual basis for two years to fill up a number of vacant posts of field-level officials soon, top officials in the BGB and the Home Ministry said.
The Armed Forces Division (AFD) and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave their consent for appointing the retired officers, who are physically fit and are in between 35 and 45, the sources added. At least, 250 retired officers are likely to be appointed for the paramilitary force.
BGB Director General (DG) Major General Aziz Ahmed told The Independent that almost 60 per cent posts of officers are vacant in the force, hampering official and operational work, especially in the field.
“That’s why, we have decided to fill the vacant posts, especially those of Captains and Majors, with retired officers,” he said and added, “Initially, we will appoint a retired officer on contractual basis for two years,” he added.
The BGB Chief said that they had requested the Bangladesh Army for officers, especially in the ranks of Captain and Major, but there has been no response yet. “We will write to the Army Headquarters (AHQ) and ask them to help us, since the details of retired army officers are stored in AHQ,” he said and added that since these offices are trained and have worked in the force for a long time, they will be able to discharge their duties properly and with discipline.” He also said that some retired officers communicated with them for the job.
At present, there are some 50,000 BGB jawans working in the border areas of the country under the four
sector headquarters and they are ensuring security of the 4,427km border of the country. The BGB is entrusted with task of protecting Bangladesh’s border, anti-smuggling and anti-narcotics operations, prevention of women and children trafficking, prevention of all sorts of trans-border crimes and internal security duties. It has 53 battalions and 16 sectors under the Sector Headquarters.
On February 25 and 26, 2009, as many as 74 people, including 57 army officers, were brutally killed in a carnage at the force’s headquarters at Pilkhana. Following the massacre, the Government reorganised the force and renamed it BGB on January 23, 2010.
