Prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy has said that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami should be banned, as it is a terrorist organisation.
“We Bengalis have known since 1971 that Jamaat-e-Islami is a terrorist organisation. Now here is further proof, straight from the Islamic State. Jamaat members are actively joining IS. So, they should be banned as a terrorist organisation,” he said.
Joy, also the ICT advisor to Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina, came up with the view in a status on his Facebook page early on Saturday.
“To date, almost all terrorists arrested in Bangladesh have been members of Jamaat or its student wing Chhatra Shibir,” he said.
Joy’s comments come at a time when the so-called chief of IS fighters in Bangladesh, Shaykh Abu Ibrahim al-Hanif, claimed that the grassroots followers of Jamaat-e-Islami, an organisation under pressure over the war crimes trial and the execution of its top leaders, are joining the Islamic State.
Shaykh Abu Ibrahim al-Hanif had made the claim in an interview to the latest issue of its propaganda magazine Dabiq published on Wednesday.
On August 1, 2013, the High Court in response to a writ petition declared Jamaat’s registration as a political party illegal on the grounds that its charter is incompatible with Bangladesh’s Constitution.
On August 5, 2013, a Supreme Court chamber judge dismissed a plea by Jamaat to stay the HC verdict and sent it to the Appellate Division for final disposal. The appeal is still pending with the apex court.
