The gut-wrenching one-run defeat to India in the World T20 left a permanent scratch in the heart of the Bangladesh cricketers. Surely the nightmare would continue to haunting them until they seal any victory against India in Indian soil. On its first encounter against India at Indian soil after 1990, Bangladesh came agonizingly close to secure a memorable victory. But two rash shots from two most dependable batsmen sank the team when they needed only two runs off three balls. While Mushfiqur apologized to the fans via his twitter and facebook account, Mahmudullah Riyad remained silent on the issue. He was even tries to avoid the issue when he encountered the local journalists in Bangladesh, 20 days after that ill-fated night yesterday.
Riyad was more criticized than Mushfiqur because he didn’t learn after watching his partner’s dismissal closely. When everyone thought he would take just single to reduce the escalating pressure, Riyad surprisingly went for big shot to throw his wicket. And the fate was sealed.
After winning many matches for the country lately with such glory shot, one defeat shouldn’t take the gloss off from what he had done. But surely he was burnt inside.
He said he wants to focus on the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the moment, putting behind the nightmare. Despite sinking the team in the crucial moment, he got the first call when the Icon players were put on to distribute amongst the clubs. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club got the first token to call a player and they duly called Riyad. The first call meant the clubs pondered him the most important player. He led Prime Bank Cricket Club to secure the title in the last season. He scored more runs than his other national team colleagues and used to play big knock in the crucial moment of the DPL. Therefore he remained by far the best choice amongst the local clubs.
“I always try to contribute something for the team. I wasn’t successful every time but I left no stone unturned to give my best,” Riyad said.
Riyad said he is happy to return to the field after two weeks rest. “I started feeling boring actually. I am happy to get back to the ground.”
He however later repented for making the blatant mistakes which cost Bangladesh the match against India.
“It was beyond my imagination that we could loss the match, specially after those two consecutive fours from Mushfiqur. I was wrong. It was the ball to hit six actually. I couldn’t change what had happened already but I’ll take safe option if such situation comes again. I want to apologize to the Bangladeshi fans for the mistakes.”
