Two late strikes from Ahmed Kolo Musa kept Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra strongly on track to move into the semifinal of the KFC Independence Cup Football Tournament when they defeated Mohammedan Sporting Club by 2-1 yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. Both Mohammedan and Muktijoddha began their third match with three points each when both sides won one match and suffered one defeat each.
After winning the match Muktijoddha brought their tally six from three matches and still they have two matches left in the group phase.
Mohammedan started the tournament with 0-2 defeat at the hands of Sheikh Jamal and won the previous match against Uttar Baridhara by same margin while Muktijoddha also tasted defeat in their opener after going down to Chittagong Abahani Limited by 2-0 and managed a solitary goal victory over Brothers Union.
The day’s encounter was important for both Black and White and All Reds to remain in contention to make a room in the semifinals and the latter made it success just outplaying by two late goals.
However, on the day, the encounter between two big teams looked a display a two low profile teams, specially the first half was a very boring presentation while none of the sides could make any remarkable move to create any real chance to score goals. Though, Mohammedan were better in ball possession and producing attacks.
Mohammedan, at the late hour of the first 45 minutes, despite breaking the Muktijoddha defense line and entered into danger area, could not take any shot on target.
After the goalless first half, the match got some pace with both sides looked aggressive to keep in the hunt for further points while three goals were scored in the last 17 minutes.
Muktijoddha put Mohammedan under pressure but could not open space to score.
Mohammedan just throwing away the pressure went on a strong attack and also produced the best chance of the match when Ismail Bangura dribbled past two markers before having the Mukti goalkeeper one on one but his shot missed the target hitting keeper’s gloves.
Surviving from the big threat, Ahmed Kolo Musa broke the deadlock to put the Muktis into lead when a shot of the Nigerian from a tight angle entered into the net after touching forward Alamgir Kabir on 73rd minute (1-0).
Ahmed Kolo Musa, who scored the lone goal to earn a solitary goal win against Brothers, stunned all when his free kick from outside the box found the top corner of the net on 82nd minute (2-0).
Ismail Bangura slammed home the consolation goal for Mohammedan with a nice header on a Biswajit Ghosh corner in the added time (1-2). With this defeat Mohammedan were almost eliminated from the race although they have two matches in hand.
