20 hurt in pre-UP polls violence

About 20 people were injured in a clash yesterday between the supporters of two chairman candidates contesting in polls in Sarisha Union in Iswarganj upazila. The election is scheduled to be held on  April 23. Quoting local people police said the clash ensued between supporters of Awami League candidate Shahjahan Bhuiyan and AL rebel candidate Ekram Hossain Bhuiyan following ransacking of Shahjahan’s election campaign offices at Badhati Bazaar and Gangail areas on Sunday night.  Ekram also blamed Shahjahan and his supporters for attacking two election campaign offices at around 11.45pm that left some five of his supporters injured. On information, police rushed to the spot, said Ruhul Amin, OC of Iswarganj police. At one stage, defying police barricade, the two groups attacked each other near Ekram’s house, leaving some 20 persons on both sides injured.
