AL to reveal UP elections� evaluation report : Ashraf

The ruling Awami League (AL) will reveal an ‘evaluation report’ on the ongoing Union Parishad (UPs) elections after its completion, said AL General Secretary and Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam yesterday.
“We will not disclose any report on the UP polls right now as the local body elections are still on. If we do so now, there could be impact on the polls. But we will reveal an evaluation report on the issue after its conclusion,” he said.
The AL General Secretary came up with the statement while replying to a question at a press conference at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office. The news conference was organised to update the media on the preparations for the AL’s 20th Central Council Session, scheduled for July 10-11 this year. A 67-member preparation committee, led by AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and 11 sub-committees, comprising party’s central leaders, were formed to complete the massive task of holding the 20th National Council Session properly.
About the party’s Central Council Session, Syed Ashraf said, “Awami League is one of the biggest and oldest political parties in the country. It played a major role during the country’s War of Liberation in 1971. So, AL Council Session means the making of history. It stands for the existence of Bangladesh.” He also said that the main objective of the AL Central Council is to take the nation forward. The decision of forging the movement against the then Pakistan Government was also taken from the Council Session of AL, he added.
Replying to a question, the minister said that AL is a democratic party. “It elects office bearers through the direct votes of its councillors who come from across the country on that day. The next leader of AL would be disclosed after the Council Session.”
The party held its last (19th) triennial Central Council on December 29, 2012, which expired on December 28, 2015, according to the party’s constitution.
