Chittagong Abahani Limited survived with two second half goals in the KFC Independence Cup football tournament defeating ten-man Uttar Baridhara by 2-1 to put another step to make their room in the last four berths.
Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, the victory of the title contenders Ctg Abahani against Baridhara was not at all comfortable, as they had to wait 49 minutes against ten men Baridhara when their midfielder Kosoko saw straight red card on 11th minute.
Chittagong Abahani, with winning second successive match, who hit the transfer deal this year with roping in most of the national stars, yet to show their real strength, though they won their first match against Muktijodha by 2-0 but had to struggle yesterday to win the second match against lowly Baridhara.
After winning the match, Ctg Abahani earned six points from two encounters, three points behind Sheikh Jamal, on top with nine points when Baridhara have already completed their Independence Cup campaign empty handed and suffering defeats in all four matches.
However, Ctg Abahani, who yet to play with their full strength with lining up the five star players due to some problem after ruling from court, could go closer to produce scoring opportunity twice in the first half.
Jahid had the first chance to lead Ctg Abahani but his feeble effort after edging past the markers was straight to Baridhara goalkeeper Rajib on 35th minute and Fabric’s brilliant back volley was also went directly to the keeper on 44th.
On the other hand, Uttar Baridhara, who made huge challenge with ten men were very closer to stun the title contenders when an angular attempt from Rohit Sarkar narrowly missed the far post in the injury period of the fist half.
After a goalless first half, Ctg Abahani became more aggressive to score and also played with good control over the match and Jahid scored a goal from half chance when his effort from the box entered into net as all the defenders and even the custodian looked watching the ball going into net on 49th minute (1-0).
Continuing the pressure Ctg Abahani created another good chance to double the margin but Tareque Al Janabi failed to keep the ball into open net when he tried to score with a diving header on a Jahid cross from left on 53rd minute.
Jahid again assisted a through pass to Fabric Noel and the Haitian did not miss to slam home to double the advantage (2-0).
Khalekuzzaman scored the consolation goal for Baridhara at the fag end after controlling the ball from combined attack inside the box powered into top corner of the net (1-2) in the 90th minute.
