EC wont shoulder responsibility for polls violence

UNB

Claming that the Union Parishad election atmosphere is normal across the country, Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz yesterday said the candidates, not the Election Commission, will be held responsible for the violence outside polling stations, reports UNB. “It’s not the Election Commission but those in the election race and getting elected will have to take the responsibility for the killing incidents outside the voting centres,” he said. Hafiz came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after attending a views-exchange meeting over election code of conduct and law and order at the auditorium of the district Deputy Commissioner’s (DC’s) office.
He said in most cases the supporters of two rival candidates are indulging in clashes and killings outside polling stations over enmity among them. “These incidents are totally unexpected.”
The Election Commissioner said they directed the law enforcers to take stern action to stop recurrence of violence in the remaining phases of the staggered election. He also urged political parties and candidates to cooperate with the EC in holding the election in a peaceful manner. “We hope the political parties and candidates will refrain from engaging in fights with their opponents and avoid provocative remarks.
DC Habibur Rahman, police superintendent ATM Mujahidul Islam, district election officer Fazlul Karim, officials of BGB and Ansar, Upazila Nirbahi Officers and Officers-in-charge, of five upazilas and police stations attended the meeting.
