Cases filed against 600 BNP activists

Police filed cases against 600 BNP activists in Rameswarpur union of Gabtoli upazila of Bogra district on charges of vandalising vehicles, exploding bombs, setting fire to business establishments and attacking law enforcers on Saturday afternoon. Md. Abu Zarra, sub-inspector of Gabtoli Police Station, filed the case against over 600 BNP men early yesterday following clashes between police and BNP activists in Rameswarpur area, where he accused 48 identified and 500-600 unnamed BNP men, including the BNP-nominated chairman candidate, Abdul Wahab Mandal.  Police conducted a drive early yesterday and arrested five of the accused from Rameswarpur area, Abu Zarra said.
The arrestees are Abdul Bari Mia (30), Mamunur Rashid (21), Shafiqul Islam (25), Dawlatzaman (50) and Sablu Mia (20). The case was filed against them for beating up police men and obstructing police duty. On Saturday, a clash erupted between the supporters of the two chairman candidates of Rameswarpur union parishad BNP and Awami League over the union parishad polls. At least 12 people of both parties were injured, including two police constables.
Ten motorbikes and five business establishments were set ablaze by the attackers.    
Police from Bogra and the district headquarters rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. But they were surrounded by the BNP activists. At one stage, police had to fire rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. At least 12 opposition activists were injured. Additional law enforcers were deployed in the area, said Md. Asaduzzaman, superintendent of police, Bogra.
