Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday underscored the need for strict implementation of laws to bring back discipline in the transport sector and thus reduce road crashes, reports UNB.
“We must bring an end to our impunity culture. We have to enact laws in the interest of people and implement those to reduce road accidents, ease traffic jam and bring discipline in the transport sector,” he said.
The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a monthly multi-stakeholder workshop on the draft of ‘Bangladesh Road Transport Act 2016’ at Bangabandhu International Conference Centere (BICC).
Quader noted that if there is a harsher punishment in place, drivers will drive vehicles maintaining discipline for fear of punishment.
“If there’s no fear for punishment, they’ll drive vehicles recklessly which will lead to road accidents,” he said.
