General students of Jagannath University (JnU) observed a daylong strike yesterday protesting the killing of online activist and their fellow Nazimuddin Samad. Witnesses said a group of protesters locked the gatesof the Arts Faculty and Science Faculty of the university around 8am. Maximum classes of the university were canceled following the strike. The demonstrators held a rally on the campus around 10am and later brought out a procession chanting various slogans.
Convener of the protest Nurul Amin at a press briefing said they will lay siege to the administration building of the university on April 13 to press home their demand. They claimed that the university authorities are not sincere in this regard and vowed to continue the protest until their demand is met. Nazimuddin Samad, 26, an LLM student of Jagnnnath University, the information and research secretary of Sylhet unit of Bangabandhu Jatiya Jubo Parishad and an activist of Sylhet Ganajagaran Manch, was killed by some unidentified assailants in the capital on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, it has been four days since Jaganath University student Nazimuddin Samad was murdered, but police are yet to find a clue. They suspect that though Samad was killed in the city’s Sutrapur area, the plan was hatched outside Dhaka—probably in Samad’s home district Sylhet. Police are following up possible clues in Sylhet and questioning Samad’s close friends.
