The Witcher 3: An excellent role-playing game
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing video game set in an open world environment, developed by Polish video game developer CD Projekt RED. Announced in February 2013, it was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 19 May 2015. The game is the third in the series, preceded by The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which are based on the series of fantasy novels of the same title by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, but all take place after them.
Played in a third-person perspective, players control protagonist Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who sets out on a long journey through the large land of Northern Kingdoms. Players do battle against the world’s many dangers using swords and magic, while interacting with non-player characters and completing side quests and main missions all to progress through the story. Players mostly travel by foot and horseback.
After being highly anticipated before release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received critical acclaim upon release, with some publications calling it one of the best role-playing games ever developed. Many critics applauded the game’s graphics, world design, large amount of content, story, and overall gameplay.
From slaying fantastic beasts such as werewolves and griffins, to simply dragging a goat - yes a goat, no, not a demon goat, or a were-goat, or a ghost goat, just a regular goat - back to its owner, to tracking down buried treasure, The Witcher 3’s quests are medley of varied scenarios, that make the game a treat to play. Even though we’ve played it for over 200 hours now, we’re still not done with this game.
Part of the appeal lies in the way The Witcher 3 handles choice. Different games handle this in different ways - Mass Effect games broke things down into binary good and evil choices, while Metro 2033 would give you a host of choices (most of which you’d be unaware of till you reach the end) with nearly random results. Choices in The Witcher 3 are usually not good and evil, but more about picking from different shades of grey - and the game has a knack for surprising you every step of the way.
Sometimes the choice can be to spare a demon, or reform a thief, or help a warlord to reunite with his family. Each and every choice you make has an impact, but not all their effects are seen immediately. Instead, the repercussions of your decisions can make their presence felt a good 100 hours into the game, making multiple playthroughs necessary to experience the game to its fullest.
But all this would be for naught if the game was a barren, lifeless husk. Much like last year’s Assassin’s Creed Unity, The Witcher 3 also treats us to a spectacle of a game world. The low fantasy environs of The Witcher 3 are teeming with life.
Where The Witcher 3 really shines though, is how it respects your time. Over the years too many games stuffed with boring, filler tasks that exist to pad out the amount of time you’ve spent playing. There’s none of that here. Each and every moment feels like time well-spent, unlike Dragon Age: Inquisition, a game where a large chunk of the quests amounted to filling up a checklist instead of allowing you to progress through the plot or explore the world.
With an abundance of things to do, great combat, engrossing narrative, and a fantastic world to discover, The Witcher 3 is the video game equivalent to an all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s seemingly never-ending and always appetising - without the nasty side-effects that come with overeating. Quite possibly the best game we’ve played this year and the benchmark for everything else that follows.
Company of Heroes 2: A Must Play Game
Tashfiq Bin Maksud
Company of Heroes is a real time strategy game developed by Relic Games and published by SAGA for Windows Platform. It is a sequel to the game Company of Heroes basing on the same war but tells us a different story.
Unlike 2006 Company of Heroes, this game focuses on the Easter Front of the World War 2 where the most gruesome and brutal battles were fought by the German Nazi and the Soviet Union. The game portrays the iconic battles such as the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Leningrad and even takes us to the final battle of the war, the Battle of Berlin.
The game starts off with the German forces invading the Soviet Union when the invasion halts at Stalingrad which triggers the iconic battle. The game upholds the story of one man who is willing to die for his country and also to stand for what is right. Through all the traumatic incidents, the man’s commitment and morals were impeachable.
The game tests your strategic and tactical skills. With the abundance of abilities of each unit, let alone the varieties of the units, you will be able to work your own approach to a blockade or an incoming force.
Like the previous game, it consists of three resources. Ammunition, fuel and most importantly, man power. Munition and fuel are earned by capturing posts. Man power is earned by capturing sectors. Each unit consists of a squad how would automatically find cover and fight. The soldiers are better trained and more efficient than the previous game.
Off map supports can be called in. Such as artillery, air support and reinforcement. Reinforcement can vary from mission to mission. However, you will be provided with Conscript Reinforcement. The conscripts are weak against almost everything. They are more efficient in larger groups. They are virtually free with only the limitation of population and manpower.
Other than the campaign, the game provides a game mode called, “Theater of War”. It is basically an arcade mode where you can choose between the German Nazi and the Soviet Union to accomplish some specific task. It can be to hold a position until the given time, or to capture something. You will be able to choose between commanders in the game. This will give you off map support prior to the commander you’ve chosen.
Company of Heroes 2 is a multi award winning action strategy game which portrays the turn of events during the World War 2 and tells us the story of the Easter Front where 26 million souls were lost. This is an epic game rated 8.4 by IGN.
