Aircraft surcharge to be reduced: Menon

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon has assured that his ministry would consider reducing surcharge and landing charge of aircraft, said a press release received yesterday.
He came up with the commitment during addressing a flight inaugural ceremony as chief guest, arranged by Regent Airways, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Thursday afternoon.
Through the inaugural ceremony, the Airways of Regent—one of the leading private airlines of Bangladesh—launched the flight operation from Dhaka and Chittagong to Muscat in Oman on that day.  The minister said, “Our aviation sector is not big, but not small either. Despite having various constraints and problems, the private aviation sector is doing a good business. The surcharge and landing charge will be considered to be reduced.”
On oil price hike, he said, “We have no hand in reducing oil price. The government has recently decided to lessen the oil price. I think the price of aircrafts oil will also be decreased.”
Menon said that the rising of the worldwide extremism has also hit the aviation sector. “The security measure is the prime concern in the world’s airports. All are requested to take heed to the security measures at our airports.”
Thanking the Regent Airways, he said that the flights between Oman and Bangladesh will help to accelerate communication system of the two countries.
Yasin Ali, chairman of the Regent Airways, sought the policy supports from the government. Referring to the high price of oil and additional surcharge and landing charge, he called upon the government to make it rational and pragmatic.
He said they could buy the same amount of fuel from outside the country for half the price of that in Dhaka. He also claimed that landing charge of any country's local airlines was one 10th of the amount charged to foreign carriers, but in Bangladesh the landing charges were the same for local and international carriers.
Mashruf Habib, managing director of the Airways, said that they have plans to launch flights to other Middle East countries as well as some other countries very soon. He sought continuous support from Oman.
The newly inducted “Boeing 737-800” aircraft with 183 seats will be flying the route. Regent has arranged 4 weekly flights - Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday the flight will fly from Dhaka at 7:15 PM for Chittagong and will fly from Chittagong at 8:30 PM for Muscat where it will reach Muscat at 11:45 PM (Local Time). Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Monday the flight will fly from Muscat at midnight 12:45 AM and will be reaching Chittagong at 7:30 AM and Dhaka at 8:45 AM.
