Muktijodha Sangsad Krira Chakra tasted their first win in the KFC Independence Cup football tournament defeating Brothers Union by a solitary goal.
But Muktiojodha opened the scoring with late first half strike through Ahmed Kolo Musa when the Nigerian after receiving a long ball from Towhid entered into the box and edged past his markers to power home into the far post on 40th minute (1-0).
Brothers Union and Muktijodha, who were drawn in the group of death along with Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Mohammedan Sporting Club and new powerhouses Chittagong Abahani Limited, have been struggling much to move forward.
Brothers, from their previous two matches could manage a win in their opener against Uttar Baridhara by 2-0 but went down to Sheikh Jamal by 5-0 in their second match while Muktijodha suffered 2-0 defeat to Chittagong Abahani Limited in their first match.
Meanwhile, from this group, Sheikh Jamal are leading the point table with nine with winning their first three matches at a stretch, Mohammedan and Chittagong Abahani are in the second position with three points each but the former played two and the latter played one match.
Earlier, Soccer Club and Arambagh kept their slim hopes alive to move into the semifinal of the KFC Independence Cup football tournament when they shared points with a 1-1 draw at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, yesterday. After a goalless first half, Abdullah broke the deadlock on 59th minute to lead Arambagh when he scored past the Soccer Club keeper with a solo effort.
Soccer Club took just six minutes to equalize the score when Iqbal taking the advantage of Aramabagh’s sloppy defending and slammed home from the box on 65th (1-1).
In the day’s first match, it was a do or die encounter for both Arambagh and Soccer Club to remain in the race, though in the Group B Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra and Abahani Limited are leading the table with six and five points respectively.
