Domestic giants Abahani Limited emerged as the strongest team on paper after the completion of the players transfer through ‘players by choice’ for the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) yesterday at a local hotel in the city.
The traditional outfit roped in country’s two most valuable players Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan albeit the latter will be available for the super league phase as he is currently busy with playing in the Indian Premier League. In form opener Tamim Iqbal however is available for the whole league.
Abahani acquired both of the players from the Icon list, the price of the category was fixed Tk. 30 lakh. Icon players list also involved Mahmudullah Riyad, Sabbir Rahman, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Imrul Kayes who were recruited by Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Prime Bank Cricket Club, Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited, Kalabagan Krira Chakra and Brothers Union. The new pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman who was listed as A+ category players went to Mohammedan after the Motijheel outfit grabbed him in the second chance. Mustafizur, currently playing the IPL, also will be available for just super league phase.
The Icons and A+ players’ with the price of Tk. 25 lakh were put on distributing at the same time as the 12 teams got the chance to call for their wanted players. A total of 13 players were listed in those two categories. 10 players except Shakib, Mustafizur and Mithun Ali were distributed at the first chance. The reluctance to obtain Shakib and Mustafizur at the first chance was understandable. Out-of-form Mithun Ali however was lucky enough to get a team when Legends of Rupganj took him in the second chance.
National captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was at stake to be sold in the first chance. He might evolve Bangladesh a team to reckon with through his outstanding captaincy and won many trophies as a captain in domestic circuit but in club cricket he surprisingly wasn’t in the first choice for any club. Through a lottery process, Sheikh Jamal got the chance to call a player firstly and they went for Riyad while second placed Prime Bank roped in Sabbir Rahman. Prime Doleshwas then called Nasir Hossain and Abahani took Tamim. Mohammedan who was led by Mashrafe in the previous league opted Mushfiqur Rahim, leaving Mashrafe’s fate in danger. However 11th placed Kalabagan then called Mashrafe, much to the relief of his fans.
“The ‘players by choice’ is the best system as it ensures the players full payment. The system also ensures a level playing field,” said BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon after the procedure of the players transfer.
“In the previous system, the players were deprived of getting the full amount and also some clubs emerged as strongest team because of being a rich club. The other clubs who doesn’t enough money couldn’t form a team as per their expectation so a huge gap amongst the clubs was existed. This system brought all clubs to a same level and created a competitive environment,” Papon, also the chief guest of the programme added.
“The system also ensured that the players get a contract paper so that they can claim the money if the clubs leave them unpaid. The government also will get the tax. So it’s a good system, considering all aspects.”
Luck however played a good role in helping the clubs to form a desired team. Abahani was lucky enough to get a call for the first time for a several times and thereby they could take players according to their plan. But it was such system that no clubs were left unhappy at the end.
“I have to admit we were extremely lucky in this afternoon. We got players like Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, both of which effective players in domestic circuit,” said Abahani Cricket Committee vice-chairman Jalal Younus who was appeared as the lucky person for the club. Most of the time Younus, also a BCB director, got the NO.1 token in the lottery.
A total of 188 players were put on sale after 11 clubs retained 22 players (two for each club). The clubs weren’t allowed to retain player with Icon and A+ status. Newcomer Gazi Group Cricketers took two players –Alok Kapali and Elias Sunny. However 130 players were sold from the 188 players. The clubs had taken the players through a 13 rounds gruelling session, started with the players with A to F status. The clubs were allowed to take foreign players as many as they want but could play only one overseas player.
