Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday underscored the need for strict implementation of laws to bring back discipline in the transport sector and thus reduce road crashes.
“We must bring an end to our impunity culture. We have to enact laws in the interest of people and implement those to reduce road accidents, ease traffic jam in the capital and bring discipline in the transport sector,” he said.
The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a monthly multi-stakeholder workshop on the draft of ‘Bangladesh Road Transport Act 2016’ at Bangabandhu International Conference Centere (BICC).
Quader noted that if there is a harsher punishment in place, drivers will drive vehicles maintaining discipline for fear of punishment.
“If there’s no fear for punishment, they’ll drive vehicles recklessly which will lead to road accidents,” he said.
He also informed that the proposed law is being enacted after 33 years, hoping that it will help reduce road crashes, reports UNB.
Speaking as a special guest, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan in the programme said as there will be a regional road connectivity of Bangladesh with its neghbouring countries, the law should be enacted keeping pace with laws of that countries.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nazrul Islam, Columnist Syed Abul Maksud, Actor Ilias Kanchan, General Secretary of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Samity Khandaker Enayetullah and World Health Organisation (WHO) representative Dr N Paranietharan were present at the workshop in the capital on the ocassion.
