City AL ‘without Maya, Qamrul’

The ruling Awami League is going to announce today two separate committees for its Dhaka city unit, comprising senior and young leaders who are dedicated and committed. Dhaka City unit general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and its joint general secretary Advocate Qamrul Islam may be dropped from the new committees while AKM Rahmatullah MP and Lalbagh thana AL president Abul Hasnat are going to be the presidents of the Dhaka north and Dhaka south units respectively, party insiders said.
The new committees will be announced after a long delay as the AL has already failed to announce its city committees within the deadline. The tenure of the last council session of the city committee has already expired.
The last council for the unit was held on December 27, 2012, nine years after its previous council, which was held on June 18, 2003, and the committee was announced on February 5, 2004.
According to the AL party constitution, the triennial council session of every organisational unit is supposed to be held every three years. Talking to this correspondent, AL joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said the two separate committees for the Dhaka City Unit AL will be announced during a press conference at 11am today at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office.
AL general secretary and public administration minister, Syed Ashraful Islam, will announce the names of the leadership of the new committees for the unit.
Hanif said the fresh city committee will be divided into two units, in line with the bifurcation of the Dhaka City Corporation. Two separate committees for Dhaka North and Dhaka South will be announced, he added.
Replying to a question, he said the new committees for the Dhaka North and South units will be formed comprising senior and young leaders who are dedicated, committed and loyal to the party.
Meanwhile, the incumbent general secretary of the united Dhaka City unit of the AL, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, and its joint general secretary, Advocate Qamrul Islam, may be dropped from the new committees, party insiders said.
Maya, also the relief and disaster management affairs minister, and Qamrul Islam, also the food minister, may be dropped from the new committee for their recent activities that tarnished image of the party and the Sheikh Hasina government, they said.
When contacted, Lt. Col. (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan, who has been given the responsibility to choose suitable leaders for Dhaka North, said, “There is no obligation to have Maya and Qamrul in the city committee. AL is a large political party. It has many competent and dedicated leaders to run the city committees.”
Replying to a question, he said a full-fledged committee will not be announced at the press conference. Only the names of presidents and secretaries of the two committees will be announced.
The AL organising secretary, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, also confirmed that Maya and Qamrul would have no place in the new AL city committee.
Besides, several sources of the AL have confirmed that Dhaka-11 constituency lawmaker, AKM Rahmatullah, and an AL leader, Mohammad Sadek Khan, are going to be president and secretary respectively of the AL Dhaka North Unit, while the Lalbagh thana AL president, Abul Hasnat, and incumbent city unit organising secretary, Shah-e-Alam Murad, are going to be president and secretary respectively for the AL Dhaka South Unit.
Talking to The Independent yesterday, Shah-e-Alam Murad said that he has been invited to the press conference, and is optimistic about being the general secretary of the new committee for Dhaka South.  Abul Hasnat said, “Yes, our party president Sheikh Hasina has called me to her official residence Ganabhaban on March 11, and I hope I will be part of the new committee.”
