Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club reserved the first semifinal berth in the KFC Independence Club Football Tournament when they survived with an own goal victory against the Uttar Baridhara yesterday. Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, the only goal of the first match of the day was scored when Baridhara defender Monir Alam conceded an own goal. Baridhara got a chance soon to draw level when Faisal Ahmed Shitol squandered the opportunity in one on one situation with only to beat Jamal goalkeeper.
In the boring match between the favourites and underdogs Monir Alam of Baridhara broke the deadlock on 15th minute when his header to his goalkeeper went into the net over the latter head (1-0).   Sheikh Jamal, who began their campaign of the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Mohammedan Sporting Club and crushed Brothers Union by 5-0, took the match against Uttar Baridhara very lightly and looked playing with relaxed mood, as they could not score any more goals in the full 90 minutes time.
Sheikh Jamal, who are on hat-trick of winning the Bangladesh Premier League as they are the defending champions and also won the league trophy in 2013-14 season, are in some trouble this season with losing most of their key performers, like Mamunul Islam, Jamal Bhuiyan, Raihan Hassan, Sohel Rana, Nasir Chowdhury and some others. But in the first two matches of the Independence Cup it looked that they did not suffer much as they had played those matches with full dominance.
The result of the match was not a good one just before  going to Malaysia to play their AFC Cup away match against Selangor to be held on April 12. However, the match started with both the favorites and the under-dogs played evenly while the latter were better in producing scoring chances but a half-hearted attempt of striker Faisal Ahmed Shitol denied Baridhara of taking an early lead.
Jamal, who had the first half lead with an odd goal, despite having better ball possession could not open spaces to create any certain scoring chances, as the forward line were very much disorganised playing with plenty of miss passes. Meanwhile, Uttar Baridhara could stun Sheikh Jamal when they threatened with going closer to score goals. Besides Shitol’s missing an opportunity in the first half, substitute Alamgir also failed to touch his header in an open net on 80th minute.
Jamal’s only outstanding effort came in 86th minute when a free kick of Wedson Anslme could have been a goal but his curling shot first denied by the Baridhara goalkeeper and then went outside hitting the side post.
