Teacher sued over corporal punishment

A case has been filed against an assistant teacher of Rupdia Welfare Academy School at Rupdia village in Sadar upazila on Friday night allegedly for torturing a student in the classroom, in violation of a High Court order, reports UNB. In its judgment delivered on January 13, 2011, the High Court found that corporal punishment was a violation of children's rights, and ordered that the practice be prohibited not only in schools, but across all settings. Ilias Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said Roushanara Begum, mother of Mizanur Rahman,17, a class IX student of the school and resident of Rupdia village, filed the case against the teacher, Jamal Hossain on Friday night. According to the case statement, Mizanur Rahman was severely beaten up and injured by teacher Jamal Hossain as he (Mizanur) asked one of his classmates to put back his pen on the table, which fell suddenly while he was taking loose sheets during the monthly test for Bangla 1st paper around 12 pm on Thursday. Later Mizanur Rahman got out of the classroom and went to his house without completing the test. Seeing the injury marks on the body of Mizanur, his mother Roushanara submitted a written complaint to the headmaster of the school seeking punishment for the accused
teacher. Meanwhile, Mizanur was admitted to a local hospital.
