2,672 chairman candidates in third phase

A total of 2,672 candidates will contest for the post of chairman in 620 union parishads (UP) across the country in the third phase of UP polls scheduled for April 23, Election Commission (EC) sources said yesterday. Of the chairman candidates, a total of 1487 aspirants will contest in the polls being nominated by 13 registered political parties out of the total 40. In addition, 1185 candidates will contest as independent candidates for the chairman posts. Among the political party candidates, ruling Awami League has nominated 620, Bangladesh Nationalist Party selected 539, Jatiya Party fielded 167.
