Three people accused in a number of criminal cases were killed in ‘gunfights’ with law enforcers in Tangail and Laxmipur districts yesterday. Two outlaws were killed in an encounter with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jugni Hatkhola village under Tangail Sadar Upazila around 1am of Thursday. RAB seized one pistol and a revolver from the spot. The deceased were identified as the zonal commander of defunct Purbabangla Communist Party (Lal Potaka), Fazol, 40, and his associate Uzzol, 35. Two RAB members were also injured in the gunfight, said officials. Commander of RAB-12 CPC- 3 of Tangail, Mohi Uddin Faruki, told journalists that RAB came to know that the outlawed had gathered in the village and were planning an attack. As RAB members encircled the place, sensing trouble, the outlaws opened fire at them. RAB retaliated for their safety, and the two died on the spot, while others managed to escape the spot. The two injured RAB members have been admitted to the Tangail Medical College Hospital. Faruki added that Fazol was wanted in at least 20 cases of murder. Meanwhile, in Laxmipur, a local criminal was gunned down in an exchange of fire with police in Latifpur village area under Sadar upazila in the wee hours of Thursday. Three cops also received injuries in the incident, said police. The deceased was identified as Kawser alias Boro Kawser, 35, son of Yunus Miah of west Latifpur village in Chandragonj union. He was wanted in six cases filed against him in Sadar and Chandragonj police stations, police said. They also seized arms and ammunition from the spot.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Chandragonj Police Station AKM Azizur Rahman confirmed the incident to The Independent. According to police, a local outlaw, Kawser, along with his accomplices, was making preparations to commit robbery at Latifpur village, beside the No. 3 Bridge area, when the police petrol team got tipped-off. Sensing the presence of police, they opened fired, forcing law enforcers to return fire, and a gunfight ensued. Eventually, Kawser was killed on the spot, while other criminal managed to flee.  The police team also seized some firearms from the spot. Police said the body was sent to hospital for autopsy.
