Jute mill workers continue strike

KHULNA: The indefinite strike enforced by the employees of seven state-owned jute mills in the district to press home their five-point demand entered fourth day yesterday. Jute mills workers of Khulna-Jessore industrial belt under the banner of Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) and Non-CBA Oikko Parishad jointly have barricaded the Khulna-Jessore highway in Atra industrial area and railways tracks at Khalispur Notun Raster Moar from 6am to 2 pm yesterday.
As a result, a huge number of vehicles had to remain stranded at both the ends of the barricade.  The barricade followed by a rally at the same place with the convener of the committee and general secretary of CBA of Crescent Jute Mills Md Sohrab Hossain in the chair. Jute mill CBA leaders urged BJMC to fulfill their demands for greater economic interest of the country. Otherwise, workers will go on movement for indefinite period which include further road and rail blockade and then fast-unto-death programme.
The agitating seven out of nine state-owned jute mills in Khulna region Crescent, Platinum, Star, Aleem, Eastern, JJI and Carpeting Jute Mills— enforced the strike on Monday morning.The demands of the workers include adequate allocation for the jute industry, payment of their arrears, formation of a wage board and stopping the move to privatise the state-owned jute mills.
Earlier on March 16 they had given the government an April 3 deadline to meet their demands.
Officer-in-Charge of Khalishpur police station Md Anowar Hossain said they requested the workers to shorten their barricade time as it disrupted transport services on the highway creating sever traffic jam.
