Woman killed ‘by husband’
Benapole: A four-month expecting woman was strangulated to death allegedly by her husband over dowry at Bagdah village in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore district early yesterday, reports UNB.
Quoting locals, Sub-inspector of Keshabpur Police Station Tariqul Islam said Raich Uddin Gazi used to torture Nasrin Begum, 24, since after their marriage.
They locked into a quarrel over a dowry issue at night.
At one stage, Raich strangulated Nasrin to death in the dead of night. Informed by locals, police recovered the body of Nasrin from her house on Thursday morning and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Raich Uddin Gazi went into hiding after the incident, police said.
Wild elephants kill youth
BANDARBAN: A youth was trampled by a herd of wild elephants in Bamhatirchhara area under Lama upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports BSS.
The victim was identified as Osman Gani, 27, son of Shafik Ahamed, resident of the same area.
Police sources said the elephants coming from the nearby forests trampled Osman Gani while he was staying at a nearby field of his house.
Five to die for murder
Sunamganj: A court here yesterday sentenced five people, including three siblings, to death for killing a man in Tahirpur upazila here in 2006, reports UNB.
The condemned convicts were Md Abdur Rahim, son of Md Kachna Miah, three siblings-Ershad Ali and Julhas Miah and Emran Miah, sons of Azim Uddin and Mohorom Ali, son Montaj Miah of Sundor Pahari Kalikapur village of the upazila.
Among them, the three siblings were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, the convicts stabbed Arju Miah, a resident of the same village, to death following previous enmity in front of his house on November 15, 2006. Victim’s son Nazrul Islam filed a murder case against 11 people in this connection. After examining the records and witnesses, judge of additional sessions judge court Pronoy Kumar Das handed down the verdict.
2 killed in road accident
Gopalganj: Two motorcycle riders were killed as a bus hit their vehicle at Pathalia on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Sadar upazila yesterday morning, reports BSS.
One of the deceased is Idris Ali, 55, son of late Malek Mollah of Fukra village in Kashiani upazila of the district.
Sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station Shah Alam said the accident occurred when a speedy bus hit the motorcycle from behind in the area, leaving the duo dead on the spot. Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
