Activists of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) yesterday brought out procession in city and laid a siege to Divisional Office demanding rightful share of the River Teesta.
The siege programme was led by Comrade Ahasanul Habib Syed, Convener, Gaibandha BSD.
Over two thousand leaders, workers and farmers of the sixteen districts of Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions joined the programme.
Speakers at the programme said theTeesta is the fourth biggest river of the country. Farmers, fishermen and boatmen are dependent on the river for their livelihood, they said.
But the river, the lifeline of the millions of people of the 16 northern districts, is being dried up as water is not released through Gajaldoba Barriage, built by India. The speakers said due to drying up of the river hundreds of land labourers have become jobless and are passing miserable days in the absence of any work.
The speakers criticised the government for, what they said, leasing out of river corridor, gas block and other properties to India.
The speakers said they have no alternative but to start movement to save 54 rivers, including the Teesta, and save the farmers of northern region.
