As Medical experts say that diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose which may over time lead to serious damage to heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves and as such, attention and action of every goveryment, policy-makers, health personnel and in fact, every individuals are essential to prevent the risk factors of the disease. The prevalence of diabetes has been steadily increasing in the past few decades, in particular in low and middle-income countries, as per WHO report on the issue.
WHO key facts shows that globally there were an estimated to be 9 percent of diabetes among adults aged 18 years and above in 2014 and an estimated 1.5 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes in 2012. The fact also shows that more than 80 percent of diabetes death occur in low and middle income countries. WHO projects that diabetes will be the seventh leading cause of death in 2030. The study suggested healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoding tobacco use for a diabetes-free healthy life.

Sustainable Development Goal 3 included the target of reducing premature mortality from noncommunicable disease by one-third by 2030. As signatory Bangladesh is committed to work for the health and welfare of the people. However, alongwith government efforts civil society, educators, manufactureres, employers, leaders of the society, private sector and media and individials can play significant role in combating diabetes.
WHO facts revelas that diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Various study shows that 50 percent of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease i.e. primary heart disese and stroke. Combined with reduced blood low, it causes neuropathy i.e. damage of nerve. According to experts, the important cause of blindness that occurs as a result of long-terms accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina and one percent of global blindness is for diabetes. This is not the end result. Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure and the overall risk of deaths among people with diabetes is at least double the risk of their peers without diabetes.
At this scenario, World Health Day 2016 theme urges on increasing awareness about the risk factors of diabetes and take effective measures to combat the disease, take steps to prevent diabetes and diagnose, treat and care for the people suffering from the disease and launcing the first global report on diabetes that describe the burden and consequences of disease and advocate for stronger health systems to ensure improved surveillance, enhanced prevention and effeicte management of the disease.
For a healthy life, there is no other way but to reduce the risk factors of diabetes: Lifestyle measures have been most effective in preventing or delaying diabetes and for that people should maintain normal body wieght, remain physically active – at least 30 minutes of regular exercise daily, eating healthy diet and avoding tobacco use, early diagnose that can reduce the risk factors. On the other, as per medical experts, intervention factors include- moderate blood glucose control, blood pressure control while cost saving interventions include: screeing and treatment for retinopathy that causes blindness, blood lipid control in order to regulate cholesterol levels and screening for early signs of diabetes relating to kidney disease. Again these measures should be supported by effectivelhy maintaining heatlhy diet and regular physical activity and maintaining body weight normal.
Bangladesh scenario: As per WHO, diabetes patients were gradually increasing across the world and more people in developing countries like Bangladsh compared with developed countreis across the world are affected by diabetes. Data reveals that there are around seven million people have been suffering from diabetes in the country and the number of such patients is rising by 5 to 6 percent each year.
