Arrest Tonu killers or face cultural shutdown

Sammilita Sangskritik Jote yesterday demanded the arrest of Sohagi Jahan Tonu’s killers by April 11 for bringing them to quick justice, reports UNB. An eight-member team of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, led by its President Golam Kuddus, submitted a memorandum, containing their demand, to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Information officer of the Home Minister Sharif Mahmud Apu received the memorandum as the minister was not present at the Secretariat. The Jote leaders said they will hold a joint rally of cultural activists from where they may announce countrywide shutdown of all cultural activities. They voiced resentment as there has been no visible progress in investigation into the Tonu murder case though 16 days had elapsed since the gruesome murder, leading to the flow unverified information across the media and social media. The body of Tonu, 19, a second year history student of Victoria College and a member of Victoria College Theatre, was recovered from Comilla’s Mainamati Cantonment area on March 20. Police suspected that she had been raped before the murder. The following day, victim’s father filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station in connection with the incident. The killing of the college student sparked widespread protests across the country. They also demanded the government take swift action against the recent surge in oppression against women and children across the country. A copy of the memorandum was passed on to the Inspector General of Police as well, Kuddus said while talking to reporters after submitting it. Asked about the government's decision to prohibit any cultural programmes on Pohela Baishakh after 5pm that day, he welcomed the move from a security perspective, but warned not to interfere incultural affairs. He demanded that the time be extended till 10pm instead.
