A large number of people in Melandaha upazila have been suffering since the collapse of the bridge over Balidakhali canal at village Sadipati during last year’s flood.
The bridge that connects Sadipati-Tonki road was only means for communication for about 20 thousand people in 12 villages.
The canal flowing through the middle of Sadipati has divides 11 other villages on eastern and western sides.
The villages on the eastern side include the villages-Kulia, Tarakandi, Ukhretair, Bhaluka, Chinitola, Ballavpur and those on the western side are Pochabahela, Davshai, Pugli, Shirighat and Teghoria.
According to sources, there are around 10,000 people of six eastern villages and 8,000 in five western villages. And around 200 people live in Sadipati village.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) built the 160-foot concrete bridge over the canal in 1990 to facilitate smooth communication for the villagers.
But since the bridge collapsed during floods in August, 2015, the commuters of both the sides have fallen in difficulties to reach their respective destinations. But the worst sufferers are people of Sadipati, the site of the bridge.
As the lone Sadipati Government Primary School sits on the western side, around 200 children of six eastern villages are taking risk while going to the institution passing through the collapsed bridge. Moreover, farmers of the villages are in great problem to carry their farm products to several local village markets located on the western side.
On the other hand, as the lonely Jobaida Jabbar High School and the Aleya Azam College are located in Tonki Bazar area on the eastern side of the bridge, a number of school and college-going students of five western villages are facing serious problem.
Serious patients, especially pregnant women living in western villages are facing the worst as they cannot go to Melandaha upazila health complex.
Villagers of both the sides are in great need of another new concrete bridge over the canal for better communication.
LGED sources said a proposal was sent to the higher authorities concerned for the construction of a 90-metre bridge over the canal in last November, but to no effect.
