The Dhaka University authorities have prohibited smoking in all its faculties, institutes, offices, classes, laboratories and university buildings, in view of the health hazards posed by smoking as well as ill effect on academic and working atmosphere. However, the DU authorities did not announce any method or punishment to enforce the ban on smoking. The decision was taken yesterday at a syndicate meeting of the university chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique. Arefin Siddique told The Independent that the decision has been taken to discourage students and faculty members, considering the health risks and to maintain a healthy atmosphere on the campus.
