A late goal from Paul Emile helped Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra escape with a narrow 2-1 victory over Arambagh KS in the KFC Independence Cup football tournament yesterday.
Arambagh took an early lead through Kester Akon in the second minute in the day’s first match at Bangabandhu National Stadium. Fikru Teferra Lemessa equalised it just after a minute and Paul Emily struck the winning goal for Russel in the post lemon session.
Later in the second match, Chittagong Abahani Limited, a newly appeared powerhouse, began the season with a well deserved 2-0 victory over Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra.
Tarique Al Janabi broke the deadlock with converting a penalty just on half an hour mark to lead the team and Fabric Noel from Haiti doubled the advantage on 75th minute.
The match between newly promoted Arambagh and the title contenders Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra started with huge pace and the match got excitement when two goals were scored in a span of one minute from either side.
Kester Akon of Nigeria stunned Russel with striking inside one minute 20 seconds of the first whistle and Fikru Teferra Lemessa made a fierce response in his Dhaka debut just a minute later when the Ethiopian equalised the margin.
Right after the kick off Palash sent a through from the right hand side in an open space and Kester Akon ran faster to beat Russel defenders and goalkeeper Rasel Mahmud Liton in one on situation (1-0).
Russel, who formed the team this year with an aim to regain their treble winning glory of 2012-13 season and roped in Ethiopian star striker, a big surprise among the foreign collection of this season just tipped off his class when scored a beautiful goal in his first touch.
Fikru just snatched a ball from Arambagh’s right back Liton and superbly volleyed over the goalkeeper (1-1).
It was something remarkable that Arambagh, who returned to Bangladesh Premier League this season after seven years when they were relegated in 2009, tried to fight against the title aspirants under head coach Saiful Bari Titu.
Saiful Bair’s boys played with good organisation as they looked to launch attack with quick moves and their defense was also playing cautiously hardly allowed spaces for Arambagh’s forwards.
After the one-all first half, Arambagh made a big threat inside fifth minute of restart from which they could shock Russel again but a free kick of Kester Akon returned to play after hitting the cross piece.
Russel despite having better domination in the second half could not open any certain scoring chances up to 80 minutes of the game while Arambagh could make it pleasant of their comeback with at least sharing points when they had another opportunity to regain lead. But Abu Sufian after receiving a long ball shot it straight to keeper in one on one situation on 72nd minute.
But the All Blue just escaped with 2-1 victory when Paul Emily scored from a half chance. The right foot effort of the Nigerian from top of the box entered into net after hitting the side post when an Arup Baiddaya left side cross came his way after deflecting a defender on 81st minute (2-1).
