Popular theatre troupe Mohakal Nattya Sampraday will stage the play ‘Nishimon Bisharjan’ today at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the city. Written by Anan Zaman and directed by Ashiq Rahman, adapted from Tagore’s ‘Bisharjan’, it focuses on religious extremism in society, and is cause for concern even today. The opening scene, which depicts a human sacrifice in the name of the goddess Kali, marks the nature of the story. When the king of Tripura Gobindamanikya, on realising the futility of making such sacrifices, bans the cruel practice, it causes discontent as the people are egged on by a high priest called Raghupati. The story then takes the audience to modern day Bangladesh and the dilemma faced by a young girl called Nishimon, who is mourning the death of her true love Tarataj. Encouraged by religious fanatics, Tarataj chose to become a suicide bomber. The characters eventually converge on a crossroad to share their experiences and take a stand against religious extremism.
