Youth held with 1.1 kg gold
Members of customs intelligence with the help of Armed Police Battalion (ABPn)arrested a youth with 1.1 kg gold worth about TK 75 lakh from the Green Channel area of Hazrat Shahjalal ® International Airport in the capital Monday night. Assistant commissioner of customs Shahiduzzaman Sarker confirmed the incident saying, “Airport customs seized 15 gold bars and 16 gold chains from H M Shibli. The gold was hidden in his shoes.”
Shibli, a man of Madaripur district, arrived at Shahjalal International airport by a flight no. TR-2656 of Tiger Airways, Singapore about 10 pm last night, he added. A case was lodged with airport police station in this regard.
Minor boy falls to death
A minor boy was killed as he slipped from a nagordola (amusement ride) in Khulna Trade Fair at the Circuit House ground of the city on Monday night.
Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said Md Rakib, 10, son of Ismail Hossain of Charmai area and class II student of a local madrasah fell down from the nagardola around 9pm and sustained serious injuries.
He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where he died an hour later. A probe committee has been formed to investigate the accident, the OC added.
Wall collapse kills worker
A tea worker was killed and his wife injured as a wall collapsed during heavy rains at a tea garden in Champara area of Kamalganj upazilain Sylhet early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Ajit Nayek, 45, Local union parishad chairman Soleman Miah said the wall of Ajit’s house at the tea garden collapsed following two days’ heavy rain fall, leaving Ajit dead on the spot and his wife Anju Najek critically injured. Anju was admitted to Kamalganj Health Complex
View exchange meeting held
A view exchange meeting on 'Anti-Corruption Movement at Local Level: Possibility and Challenge' was held yesterday at a local hotel in Khulna.
Organised by Sacheton Nagarik Committee (SANAC), the meeting was addressed as chief guest by Khulna divisional commissioner Md Abdus Samad while SANAC president Sheikh Abdul Quyaum was in the chair.
Among others, the meeting was addressed by executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Dr Iftekharuzzaman, veteran language hero Begum Mazeda Ali. Vice president of SANAC A K Hiru delivered the welcome speech while SANAC member Prof Anwarul Kadir conducted the meeting.
