E-governance

Government officials will have to explore the full potentials of the growing IT sector to build their capacity to run e-governance activities efficiently

The people of the country have started getting the benefits of e-governance, albeit partially. Through e-governance, government services can be made available to citizens in a convenient, efficient and transparent manner. Positively, training of 1,800 government officials has so far been completed at home and abroad on e-governance including cyber security to check the fast growing cyber crimes causing a serious threat to the information, data and services of the government, according to a report in this newspaper recently.
Establishment of transparency and accountability which is a precondition to good governance is not possible without access to updated information. Government officials will have to explore the full potentials of the growing IT sector to build their capacity to run e-governance activities efficiently. Learning computer skills should be mandatory for all government officials. There are computers in the offices of every government official but many of them do not care to use them. Their assistants or subordinates use them like typewriters. This is very unfortunate. The training of government officials will hopefully help increase public sector efficiency to deal e-governance issues.
E-governance may avoid unwanted interference of too many layers while delivering governmental services. Introduction of e-governance in a massive way can bring the desired results in the land sector. In the past, a person had to face a lot of hassles in procuring land-related documents from the relevant offices. But the computerized system has eased the whole process, much to the relief of the clients. But the system is confined to the capital city and the divisional and district towns. This should be spread to the thana and union levels.
E-governance can be introduced in the police stations. It will bring confidence and transparency in delivering things. There are incidents of suppressing facts by unscrupulous people.
Through the introduction of e-governance this can be avoided. This will lessen the hassles and harassment of the people greatly. For achieving the millennium development goal there is no alternative to introduction of e-governance in all sectors.
