Rivers around the capital are gradually dying, as untreated industrial wastes, chemical garbage, sewage, domestic effluents and water vessel’s wastes are being dumped into them. This is also polluting the rivers and endangering public health and ecology.
Besides, rampant encroachment and filling up of rivers by land grabbers are adversely affecting the rivers, green activists said yesterday (Tuesday).
Three green organisations — Paribseh Bachao Andolan (POBA), Buriganga Bachao Andolan and the Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BRCIK) with the help of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), yesterday organised an awareness campaign to stop pollution and save the rivers at the Sadarghat launch terminal in the city.
Green activists urged organisations concerned and other stake holders, including individuals, to stop dumping wastes into the rivers as the waterways were economically important.
They also demanded that the government take initiatives to save the rivers from pollution and called for taking action against those involved.
Among others, joint secretary of the BIWTA (port) Md Shahidullah, project officer Ziaur Rahman Litu, president of Nongar Suman Shams, president of the Old Dhaka Nagorik Udyog Naxim Uddin, member secretary of Buriganga Bachao Andolan Mihir Biswas, an officer of BRCIK Ferdous Ahmad, assistant secretary of POBA Md Selim, coordinator of POBA Atik Morshed and coordinator of BRCIK Syed Ali Biswas also spoke on the occasion.
As part of the programme to create awareness, the green activists placed nine issues before the stakeholders to save the city rivers.
The issues which will help create awareness are: "The Buriganga is ours and I have the responsibility to keep it pollution free. Let us promise — we will never dump wastes into the rivers. Stop dumping industrial and WASA wastes into the rivers. Free the river from encroachment. Keep the wastes and polythene at a certain place and promise not to kill aquatic lives, including fish.
