Filmmaker Shahidul Islam Khokon no more

After suffering from a motor neuron disease for the last several years, veteran filmmaker Shahidul Islam Khokon passed away yesterday at a hospital in the capital. DhakaLive has news that he breathed his last at Uttara Adhunik Hospital at 8:15am Monday and he was 59. Khokon introduced himself as a film director with the film ‘Rakter Bondi’ after he worked as the assistant director of Masud Parvez (Sohel Rana) for 10 years. Though his first two films failed commercially, his third venture titled ‘Larhaku’ starring actor Rubel was a commercial success. Then, casting Rubel as the hero, he made a number of films such as ‘Bir Purush’, ‘Bajramushti’, ‘Biplap’, ‘Utthan Paton’, ‘Santras’, ‘Top Rangbaz’, ‘Shatru Bhayangkar’, ‘Apaharon’, ‘Satarko Shaytan’, ‘Dussahas’, ‘Lampat’, ‘Rakkhash’, ‘Joddha’, ‘Biswapremik’, ‘Ghatak’, ‘Bhando’, ‘Naropishach’, ‘Pagla Ghanta’ and others. The last film he made was ‘Chehara’, in which actors Shakib and Resi acted.
Interestingly, the titles of most of the Khokon’s films came up with negative word, which he did so to focus on the real scenario of the society. On the other hand, Khokon was the director, who could successfully present late noted film actor Humayun Faridi in the commercial films. In the late 90s, he broke the conventional style of the film through making his comedy genre film ‘Bhando’. For his immense passion for the film, he sold out his own house as he faced severe financial crisis during the making of his film ‘Palabi Kothay’, the incident took place 15 years ago. He also made the film titled ‘Ghatok’ against war criminals, ‘Palabi Kothay’ for women movement and ‘Lal Sabuj’ based on the story of Bangla Bhai (a JMB top member, who was executed in 2007).
Khokon is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. l
