At least 15 activists of ruling Awami League were injured in a fierce clash at Kalamankhali village in Jhenidah Sadar upazia on Monday morning.
Of them, one Mafiz Uddin sustained bullet injury when police resorted to action to disperse the fighting mob.
Police and locals said two factions of Awami League engaged in a clash after the party did not name incumbent union parishad chairman Foyeazur Rahman as candidate for the Dogachhi union parishad polls and picked up fellow Ashahaque Ali Joarder.
The police from Jhenidah police station rushed to Kalamankhali Bazaar, about eight kilometres away, where the two groups were fighting with brickbats and machetes. The clash left 14 of both sides injured before the police fired blank shots to disperse them.
Locals said Mafiz Uddin, a supporter of Joarder, was taken to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital with bullet injuries.
Hasdan Hafizur Rahman, officer in-charge of Jhenidah police station, said additional police force have been deployed there to maintain law and order.
