A Dhaka court Monday rejected the bail petition of Bakhtiar Alam Rony, who is the son of ruling Awami League-backed lawmaker Pinu Khan. Rony is in police custody for allegedly firing from a moving vehicle in the early hours of 14 April and killing two people in the city.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haque put the accused in police custody, rejecting his bail plea.
Detective Branch (DB) Sub Inspector Dipok Kumar Das, also the investigating officer of the sensational murder case, asked the court for custody of the accused till investigations are completed. Defense lawyer Advocate Showkat Osman argued for grant of bail, claiming that Rony was being implicated in the case because of an earlier disagreement with the police.
Osman also argued that Rony is the son of a parliamentarian and that he would never kill a rickshaw driver.
Moreover, said Advocate Osman, Rony is very sick and pleaded with the court to grant him bail on humanitarian grounds.
Disagreeing with the defense lawyer Senior Assistant Police Commissioner Miraz Uddin told that court that Rony had allegedly killed a helpless rickshaw driver and a pedestrian and there were specific allegations of double murder against him. Miraz Uddin argued that the court should reject the bail petition.
According to the police, around midnight on 13 April Rony indiscriminately fired bullets on people near the Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his jeep, injuring Abdul Hakim a pedestrian and Yakub an auto-rickshaw driver.
Both were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Hakim succumbed to his injuries on 15 April, while Yeakub died in the hospital on 23 April. On 15 April a case was filed at the Ramna Police Station against unidentified persons. Later, the case was transferred to DB police on 24 May.
