Unidentified miscreants stabbed a muezzin to death inside a mosque in the capital’s Islampur area early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Belal Hossain (57). He was the muezzin of Jobbu Khan Jame Mosque. He had been working there for more than 25 years.
Inspector Abul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said that devotees first saw Belal’s body lying on the stairs when they went to the mosque for prayer yesterday morning and then they informed the police of the murder.
On receiving news, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Abul Hossain said there were several stab marks on Belal's body. Police officials told this correspondent that Belal lived on the third floor of the mosque.
Deputy police commissioner (Lalbagh Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mofiz Uddin, said, “We suspect that the muezzin was killed due to financial disputes.
However, we're considering every possible aspect, including militancy, in connection with the murder.” Replying to a question, Mofiz Uddin said said several persons were involved in the killing. He also said that a case has been filed against unidentified miscreants. “We're also interrogating some people, including the imam, mufti and khadem of the mosque,” he added.
Meanwhile, Abu Bashar, the brother of the deceased, said about some miscreants had attacked and robbed money from the mosque three months ago. Although a general diary was filed with the Kotwali Police Station, the law enforcers did not take any action, he alleged.
