Philippines man returns $.83m more

CASINO junket operator Kam Sin Wong, also known as Kim Wong yesterday surrendered an additional P38.28 million ($0.83 million) to the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), reported The Manila Times. This is on top of the initially surrendered $4.63 million, part of the $81 million stolen by hackers from the  Bangladesh Bank. Wong, represented by his legal counsels Victor Fernandez and Inocencio Ferrer, Jr., turned over the money to AMLC member and Insurance Commissioner Emmanuel Dooc, Executive Director Julia Abad and Bangladesh Ambassador to the Philippines John Gomes.
Among those present during the turnover were Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) BSP officer-in-charge Vicente Aquino, Bangladesh Embassy Manila Deputy Chief of Mission Shahnaz Gazi, Insurance Commissioner Emmanuel Dooc, AMLC Executive Director Julia Bacay-Abad, Wong’s lawyers Fernandez and Inocencio Ferrer Jr, as well as Bangladesh Bank officials. The surrendered amount was loaded into an armoured vehicle of the BSP and transported to the BSP vault.
“We turn over to the central bank exactly P38.28 million,” Fernandez told reporters in an ambush interview after the accounting of the funds by the BSP Cash Department. Fernandez said the amount represents the abandoned money of junket player Gao Shu Hua, in Eastern Hawaii Leisure Company Ltd. (EHLCL) and/or Midas Casino. He added that the surrendered money is the P40 million more or less funds that Wong had mentioned in the Senate hearing. “Kim Wong is one of the stockholders of Eastern Hawaii,” he stressed.
“Kim Wong also mentioned in the Senate hearing that he was also willing to return P450 million, but he requested a period of 15 to 20 days within which to complete the funds. According to. Wong, he was even willing to sell properties to be able to raise the necessary money.” Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Shubhankar Saha told The Independent that the money will be brought back to Bangladesh very soon. “The BSP will very soon transfer the money to our central bank,” he said.
