Youth held with 3-kg gold
Police yesterday arrested a youth with 25 gold bars weighing about 3-kg worth about Taka 1.50 crore from Kamlapur rail station in the capital.
"A team of railway police arrested Jainul Abedin, 40, with 25 gold bars weighing 10 tolas each, after searching his shoes", Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Government Railway Police (GRP) Abdul Majid told BSS early yesterday. He said the detainee arrived at Kamlapur railway station from Chittagong by Turna Nishita Express and was arrested from the Platform-3 of the station. A case was filed under Special Power Act, the OC said adding "He will be produced before the court seeking a seven-day remand" the OC added.
Pahela Boishakh programmes
The district administration has chalked out programmes to observe Pahela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year- 1423, with festivity in the city on April 14.
The programmes were finalised at a meeting held at the conference room of Rangpur Collectorate on Sunday with Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Anwar in the chair. The meeting also decided to complete the celebrations by 5 pm. The celebrations will begin at 7 am with participation of the artists of Shishu Academy and Shilpokola Academy at the Banyan Tree premises in Zila School ground and of Sommilita Sangskriti Jote on the Central Shaheed Minar premises. The authorities of Rangpur City Corporation, law enforcement agencies and other organisations have taken adequate security measures to facilitate the celebration.
50 illegal shops evicted
A mobile court of Rangpur City Corporation evicted 50 more illegal roadside shops from footpaths in the city and seized various goods in the day-long drives on Sunday.
Executive Magistrate of the City Corporation S M Golam Kibria led the mobile court, also participated by the concerned officials and employees of the City Corporation and police forces. During the drives, the mobile court evicted the illegally erected shops and establishments and seized seven signboards, several stands and rod-made materials from Rangpur Government Girls' High School to Shapla Chattar areas in the city. During the drives, the executive magistrate informed that the eviction drive will continue to evict or demolish all illegal structures and establishments from the illegally occupied footpaths in the city. Talking to BSS, city mayor freedom fighter Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu said the eviction drive will continue to completely free the footpaths and other occupied lands from the illegal occupation for ensuring better environment in the city.
