SC upholds Manju�s acquittal order

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court verdict that acquitted Forest and Environment Minister Anwar Hossain Manju in connection with a corruption charge.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed an appeal filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging the High Court verdict.
The forests and environment minister was accused of receiving Tk 75 lakh as bribes in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2007.
On June 10 in 2008, a special judge court in Dhaka found Manju guilty and sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment on charge of taking bribe Tk 75 lakh from a construction company.  Monju moved the High Court against the verdict and filed a petition with the HC seeking acquittal from the charges. The HC on August 23, 2010 acquitted Manju of the charges. The ACC moved the Appellate Division against the High Court order.
