RANGPUR: Students of the Carmichael College and Begum Rokeya Girls School formed human chain on their respective campus yesterday demanding immediate arrest of the killers of Sohagi Jahan Tanu, student of Comilla Victoria College.
The students also observed strike yesterday. The speakers said in the human chain programme, government failed to give security to the people across the country. General people, specially females, are afraid to move any where either in the town or city even village.
Ahasanul Arefin Titu, Abu Raihan Bakshi, Imran Sarkar,Mousami Akhter Mou,Toufiq Islam,Asaduzzaman Simu, among others, spoke in the human chain.
Sohagi Jahan Tonu, 19, a second year history student of Victoria College and a member of Victoria College Theatre, went missing on March 20 evening, hours after she had gone out of her house at Comilla Mynamati Cantonment for private tuition.
As protests against the killing of Tonu continued, different organisations, students of various schools staged demonstrations and formed separate human chains across the country demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to the killers.
Later, Tonu's father, Yar Hossain, found his daughter lying senseless with severe injuries in her body in a bush adjacent to their house.
She was then whisked off to Combined Military Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Hundreds of people, including students, blocked Shahbagh intersection, one of the busiest intersections in the capital on March 29, demanding the arrest of the killers of Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu. Witnesses said around 300 students from Dhaka University formed a human chain at the intersection around 1:00pm, halting traffic in the area.
Later, more protesters from different educational institutions of the city joined the human chain, demanding that the government provide security and protection for women.
