Businesses and other establishments were shuttered down and a people stayed away from work for half an hour here yesterday in a demonstration of solidarity with the demand for establishing a land port in Meherpur.
The programme was held at the call of Meherpur Land Port Implementation Forum (MLPIF).
A silence procession was also brought out in the town in support of the demand.
All kinds of transports, including
buses and coaches, did not move during the period.
Later, a wayside meeting was held at Hotel-Bazaar intersection.
Organising Secretary of MLPIF Safuan Ahmed Rupok said the establishment of land port will spur business activities in the district and create employment.
Rafiqul Alam, president of Meherpur
District Development Forum, said the Bangladesh’s first government took oath here on April 17, 1971.
This area deserves development, he
said adding that a commitment on establishment of the land port was made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a visit here
in 2010.
But there has not been any remarkable progress on the issue, he regretted.
