Tofail vows stern action against hoarding

UNB

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has warned that stern actions will be taken against those who will try to destabilise the market by creating barriers to the free flow of storage and supply of essential commodities ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, reports UNB. “Stern actions will be taken if any quarter tries to create instability in the market,” said the minister after an emergency meeting with the National Consumer Rights Preservation Council at the Secretariat yesterday. Tofail said a countrywide market monitoring by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection is in place so that the prices and supply of essentials remain normal round the year, including the Ramadan. He also sought a sensible role from the media as sometimes their reports have impacts on prices and supply of essentials in the market.
The Commerce Minister said the government will hold a meeting with all the stakeholders, including importers, dealers, wholesalers, retailers and Consumer Association of Bangladesh, ahead of Ramadan to protect consumers’ rights.
The minister said the concerned government departments and agencies would exchange views with importers, dealers, retailer and the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) to protect consumer rights before the start of the month.
He said Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) enforced round the year vigilance to keep the supply and price of essential commodities normal.
In recent period, the minister, said DNCRP
fined 15,900 commercial entities and realized Tk 1,29,74,550 under the consumer protection law and provided Tk 5,34750 to 257 complainants.
Officials said under the law the complaints get 25 per cent of the amount released as fine on the basis of the
allegations.
Senior commerce secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon and Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection M Abul Hossain Mia were also present.
