Former Dhaka City Corporation mayor and BNP Vice Chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka should be brought back from abroad to face punishment, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives recommended yesterday. The recommendation was made at a meeting of the committee held in Parliament building with its Chairman Abul Hasnat Abdullah in the chair. The committee came up with the recommendation after scrutinizing a report in this regard. The standing committee gave the opinion that the allegations of corruption against the former DCC mayor, now living in the United States, have been proven. As Khoka was sentenced to 13 years in jail, he should be brought back home to implement the verdict, it said.
Following the meeting, committee Chairman Abdullah said that a parliamentary subcommittee was constituted to look into the alleged corruption of the former Mayor and the subcommittee found evidence of his corruption. Besides, he said the investigation conducted by the ministry also found evidence of irregularities and corruption against Khoka. The committee chairman also said that the former mayor resorted to corruption in cases of allocating city corporation’s shops and open spaces, construction of buildings and tender invitations. Therefore, he said, it has been recommended that punitive measures be taken against Khoka. The standing committee meeting was addressed, among others, by committee members M Rahmat Ali, Fazle Hossain Badshah and Rahima Akter.
