No outdoor celebrations after 5pm

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said that all programmes celebrating Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, must be ended by 5pm to avoid any untoward incident. “We've imposed a ban on wearing masks and playing vuvuzela during Mongol Shobhajatra—a rally for the welfare of the nation,” he told reporters after a meeting on the law and order situation on Pahela Baishakh. The meeting was held at the home ministry yesterday. “Carrying lighters and matches has also been prohibited during the celebrations of the Bengali New Year,” he said. The home minister said law enforcement agencies have taken necessary security measures to celebrate Pahela Baishakh peacefully across the country. “CCTV cameras and watchtowers will be installed in and around improtant venues like Ramna Batamul, Teachers-Students Centre and Suhrawardy Udyan,” he added. Dr Mozammel Haque Khan, senior secretary of the home ministry, AKM Shahidul Hoque, inspector general of police, Benazir Ahmed, director general of Rapid Action Battalion, Asaduzzaman Mia, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and senior officials of the home ministry and law enforcement agencies attended the meeting.
