Leaders of the ruling Awami League (AL) yesterday expressed satisfaction over the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death sentence to Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid for killing intellectuals during the Liberation War in 1971. They also hoped that the verdict would be executed by following the necessary legal procedures.
"Much like the people, our party is very satisfied with the verdict. We've been waiting a long time for this to happen,” said AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif. He also said the AL-led government has kept its promise made to the people in its 2008 election manifesto that all war criminals would be tried before the nation.
"The war criminals are being tried and executed. This will continue. No one will be able to stop the ongoing war crimes trials,” said the AL leader, adding that the verdict against Mujahid would be implemented after completion of all legal procedures.
