The World Autism Awareness Day was observed in the country as elsewhere in the globe on Saturday. Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first three years of life, and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills.
A significant number of Bangladeshis are victims of physical and mental disabilities. Autistic people must not be considered burdens on their families, society or the state. Researches have shown that they can be groomed up as a productive force. They will have to be raised as part of the mainstream society. Through proper education and rigorous training they can be learnt skills which will help them contribute to the society. They can earn for themselves, for their families and can also contribute to the development of the country. In this way, they can live with dignity and not as objects of pity.
In this age of globalisation, information technology can do a lot for the welfare of the people with autism. Equipped with technological expertise, the autistic people can become self-reliant, support their families and even generate employment opportunities for others. The autistic people require proper infrastructural support. Government can provide it, and NGOs as well as affluent people of the country can come forward in the aid of the autistic people.
Autistic people should get some special privileges in public and private transports. They should also be treated with respect at government offices. The families of the persons with autism must be conscious in this regard. Proper medical treatment, financial, familial, social and psychological support can rejuvenate the dampening spirit of an autistic person. The government has taken some pragmatic measures for the welfare of the autistic people. More such measures can help them overcome their miseries.
Proper care, nursing, education and environment are needed to explore the latent talents of the children suffering from autism as they have unlimited prospects and strength to win over any sorts of difficulties. Conscious people, members of the civil society should stand by the autistic people. Concerted and sustained efforts are needed to uphold the rights of the autistic people.
