Activists of different political parties and cultural organisations in Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna and Rangpur cities yesterday brought out jubilant processions as the Supreme Court (SC) Appellate bench upheld the death sentence to Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid for his crimes against humanity during Liberation War. BSS adds from Chittagong: Soon after upholding the death penalty by the Appellate bench of the Supreme Court for the 69-year old commander of Al-Badr, the militia raised by Pakistan to crush the Bengali struggle for independence, hundreds of people brought out processions from different parts of the city and started to gather on the Chittagong Press Club (CPC) premises. Welcoming the verdict, Ganajagaran Mancha in Chittagong also brought out a procession from the CPC premises which concluded at the same venue Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar after parading different city streets. Paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, the Mancha activists place wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and held a rally there. Addressing the rally, they said through the verdict it is proved that the rule of law had been established in the country. They also demanded quick execution of the verdict. Coordinator of Ganajagaran Mancha in Chittagong Sharif Chowhan said the verdict fulfilled the mass expectation. He demanded implementation of the verdict immediately. He also urged the government to execute the verdicts of all war criminals as soon as possible. Different political parties, including Bangladesh Awami League (AL), Communists Party of Bangladesh, also brought out processions at different parts of the city. The leaders and activists of the party gathered at Darul Fazal Market party office and held a rally there. Our Barisal Correspondent adds: Residents of Barisal city welcomed upholding the death penalty by the Appellate bench of the Supreme Court to Mujahid. Barisal Sangkritik Sangathan Sammanay Parishad, a front of 27 cultural organisations brought out procession at Sadar road yesterday welcoming the verdict and demanded immediate its implementation. The programme, presided over of BSSSP President Santi Das and addressed among others by Syed Dulal, Kazal Ghos, Azmal Hosen Labu and Mizanur Rahman. Speakers of the programme said that there is no alternative to death punishment to the war criminal. At the same time the seven organisations, including district command of Muktijoddha Sangsad, Muktijuddho Ekattor, Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Barisal Sangkritik Sangathan Sammanay Parishad, Muktijoddha Sangsad Sontan Command, Sector Commanders Forum and Group Theater Federation in separate statements expressed satisfaction over the verdict. On other hand Barisal city and district units of Bangladesh Chhatra League organised a rally welcoming judgment and demanding immediate execution of the death sentence. Law enforcing agencies of the city took tight security from Monday night to control any situation. Huge police have been deployed in almost every corner of the city and RAB were patrolling the city. In Khulna, a large number of people, including Awami League (AL) Khulna city and district unit, AL students’ wing Chhatra League Khulna unit, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Khulna unit, Muktijoddha Oikya Parishad Khulna unit, Workers Party of Bangladesh Khulna unit hailed the verdict and took to the streets. Different ward and thana units under Khulna city AL also brought out processions in the respective areas. Khulna unit convener of Professional Coordination Committee (Pesajibi Samonnoy Parishad), also Vice-Chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Prof Dr Muhammed Alamgir gave cheerful satisfaction the verdict against Mojaheed. He also demanded banning the politics of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and student body Islami Chhatra Shibir to establish a non-communal state. Our Correspondent from Rangpur reports: Tight security has been beefed up in the city from early morning to avoid any untoward incident due to verdict of Jamaat leader.
