Expressing satisfaction over the verdict that upheld the death penalty of Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, the leader of the Sector Commanders' Forum, said it was the victory of the Liberation War and of Bangladesh. Forum chairman, Maj. Gen. (retd) KM Shafiullah, told The Independent that the court has delivered the correct verdict by upholding the death penalty for Mujahid. “Those who committed mass atrocities against humanity during the War of Independence in 1971 should be brought under trial. We want to see their trials during our lifetime. If it is not possible in our lifetime, the new generation should complete the trial to free the nation from stigma,” he asserted. He further said the war criminals have no place on the soil of the country: “We don’t want to see any sign of the war criminals on the soil of Bengal. Those who were against the birth of Bangladesh should not have any place here,” he added. In the list of 50 war criminals published by the Sector Commanders’ Forum, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid was in the eighth position. Cultural leader Nasiruddin Yusuf Bacchu said the verdict against Mujahid was “expected”. “We hoped for such a verdict. The verdict has proved that the Jamaat leaders have no place in the country. We want a ban on the party,” he added. Expressing satisfaction, Gonojagoron Mancha’s leader, Imran H Sarker, said, “We were apprehensive that Mujahid might be released because of loopholes in the law. But the SC verdict has removed our fears.” “We are now waiting for the execution of the war criminal. The people’s wait will end after Mujahid’s execution,” he added.
